BERKELEY, Calif. — Neil McGuire has an insider’s view of Olympic athletes
Alex Morgan and Betsy Hassett. As coach of the women’s soccer team at University of California-Berkeley, McGuire knows them well since they also are soccer student athletes. At the London Games, Morgan plays on the U.S. women’s team, and Hassett will play for her native New Zealand.
McGuire said he is “very proud of them [and] anyone who is representing their country, whatever country it may be.” The young women train with their national coaches and their national team, but McGuire and his fellow coaches “try to develop them in every way necessary, mentally being one of them” throughout the year. He is “very much so following the Olympics” and looks forward to watching both progress in their journey at the 2012 London Olympics.
The U.S. women’s team will face off with Canada in the Olympic semifinals.
